Advantages over Caliper Saddle Mic Technology
  1. Profiling Accuracy and Reliability                                     Eliminating the drawbacks of extraneous motion and vibration inherent in saddle mics of the caliper design, the Epac 3000 is a completely rigid Roll Micrometer that, except for the wheels and gauge head probes, has no moving parts. This rigidity adds to its performance, providing both repeatability and reproducibility as verified by rigorous testing. Epac R&R tests are done in working roll shops, not laboratories.
  2. Compact Design                                                                  The smaller size gives the user the ability to physically fit into places that would have been unavailable for roll inspection, allowing the instrument to be used for thermal profiling in tight places, troubleshooting in the mill, and skating rolls without pulling them from a stack, as well as for the traditional profiling of rolls.

Light Weight                                                                        Weighing in at 14.5 pounds for the backup micrometer, the lighter weight benefits the user in providing a safer instrument for the operator, dramatically reducing the fear of back injury from handling a saddle mic that might weigh up to fifty pounds. Operator training and attitude affect Epac 3000 proficiency to a lesser degree than they do C mic proficiency. With a minimum of training and with a less than stellar attitude, operators can get more accurate and reliable readings with Epac 3000 than with C mics.

  • Spot problems in the mill with the ability to skate rolls all over the plant and to test for temperature as well as profiling problems.
  • With Epac's light weight compact design, troubleshoot problems by skating rolls in any position or location that is physically safe for the technician.
  • By monitoring rolls progressively as they come out of a mill or stand, you can actually monitor mill performance.
  • Skate top and bottom work rolls as soon as they are pulled from a stand (before the set is disassembled) to check for hot spots and profile anomalies.
  • Analyze dirty skates to see if there are problems in the mill that should be corrected.
  • Inspect rolls in the field to spot and identify problems with mills.
